Using an expert practitioner to spread good practice

A new head of English inherits an underachieving, change-resistant department

One of our expert practitioners (a highly effective Head of English and Literacy in a Hertfordshire comprehensive, seconded 15 days a year) worked with a new Head of English as an adviser and mentor. This colleague inherited an apparently change- resistant department in a large comprehensive. Our colleague worked with the new subject leader to evaluate her improvement strategies and give advice about implementation. In addition she suggested additional learning resources for GCSE, a new approach to teaching poetry in KS3 and KS4, and a change of exam board at ‘A’ level.

GCSE A*-C attainment rose from 29% to 44% in year one with sustained improvement in the following year.
