Service Area 3: Subject improvement


The Offer

(a) Subject specialist OfSTED trained inspectors, expert practitioners and ASTs are available in almost all secondary subjects to:

  • Act as coaches  for subject leaders and subject teachers and advise on curriculum, teaching and learning and assessment
  • Carry out 1 or 2 day supported self review of subject departments leading to recommendations for subject teams
  • Run specialist training courses

(b) Whole-school Improvement consultants deliver Subject Leader training for self evaluation as whole INSET days or as a series of twilight sessions.

The key components are:

  • The Subject Leader Standard
  • Using quantitative student level data to evaluate and plan for improvement
  • Using a range of sources for subject self evaluation, how to run:
    • moderation exercises
    • student work scrutinies
    • marking and assessment surveys
    • students consultations about teaching and learning needs
  • How to observe the classroom, feed back and take the right action
  • Self evaluation as a team building tool
  • Contributing to whole-school self evaluation
