Subject improvement
The Offer
(a) Subject specialist OfSTED trained inspectors, expert practitioners and ASTs are available in almost all secondary subjects to:
- Act as coaches for subject leaders and subject teachers and advise on curriculum, teaching and learning and assessment
- Carry out 1 or 2 day supported self review of subject departments leading to recommendations for subject teams
- Run specialist training courses
(b) Whole-school Improvement consultants deliver Subject Leader training for self evaluation as whole INSET days or as a series of twilight sessions.
The key components are:
- The Subject Leader Standard
- Using quantitative student level data to evaluate and plan for improvement
- Using a range of sources for subject self evaluation, how to run:
- moderation exercises
- student work scrutinies
- marking and assessment surveys
- students consultations about teaching and learning needs
- How to observe the classroom, feed back and take the right action
- Self evaluation as a team building tool
- Contributing to whole-school self evaluation
